What Histotechnologists Do
A histotechnologist is a clinical laboratory professional who prepares and tests microscopic tissue samples. Skills used by histotechnologists include preserving, processing, embedding, sectioning and staining patient specimens. As an important component of the medical profession, histotechnologists are relied upon for their dependability, precision, and attention to detail, since their initial processing of medical specimens will guide the treatment decisions made by doctors.
How The 3 + 1 Program Works
Years 1 - 3 at Seton Hill
Spend your first three academic years in the College of Health Professions and Natural Sciences at Seton Hill, mastering the background scientific disciplines that prepare will prepare you for advanced laboratory training. You will also benefit from a completing a strong liberal arts course of study at Seton Hill - preparing you for success wherever you career takes you.
Year 4 at UPMC School of Histology*
Your final year involves intensive training at the UPMC School of Histology. The 9-month accelerated program begins in January and July of each year and combines online learning with practical training. The curriculum includes instruction in the collection and preparation of surgical tissue specimens. After successfully completing the program requirements and training, students graduate with a B.S. degree in Histotechnology from Seton Hill University.
* Clinical spaces are limited, standards for admission are high, and admission to Seton Hill's Histotechnology 3 + 1 Program does not guarantee admission to the UPMC School of Histology. If a Seton Hill Histotechnology major is not accepted into the UPMC School of Histology, they may complete either a Biology (B.A. or B.S.) or Health Science (B.S.) degree in their final, fourth year at Seton Hill University.

Your Career in Histotechnology
After completing this degree program, you will be eligible to take the national examination of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Board of Certification or Histotechnicians, HT(ASCP) or Histotechnologists, HTL(ASCP). According to the National Society for Histotechnology, the demand for individuals with this specialized training will continue to increase into the foreseeable future.
