Data Science (B.S.)
Unleash the Power of Math & Computer Science to Interpret Big Data
Leaders in every industry have more information than they can manage. As a result, they turn to data scientists to help them gather it, interpret it, and use it to do things like:
- epidemiological modeling (COVID & viral transfer modeling)
- optimize shipping routes & supply chains
- drive online customer engagement through dynamic content on social & web platforms
At Seton Hill, we will teach you how to use computer science, information science, statistics, and mathematics to become a confident, successful data scientist.
Why Choose the Data Science Major at Seton Hill?
Two Areas of Specialization
As a data science major at Seton Hill, have the option to choose a specialization that best fits your interests and career goals. If you are unsure about the specialization that’s best for you, faculty will assist you in making a choice. It is also possible to switch tracks after you begin taking classes.
- Computational Analysis: Learn how to use math, statistics and advanced programming languages to analyze large datasets.
- Data & Modeling: Gain in-depth knowledge on how to manage large amounts of data using math, physics and database management systems.
Commercial Grade Software & Tools
At Seton Hill, we use commercial-grade software and tools in real scenarios that we will analyze together in-depth.
Examples of some of the applications students will gain practical experience using includes, but is not limited to the following: SQL Server, MySQL, Hadoop, Apache Spark, MongoDB, MATLAB, Tableau, TensorFlow, D3.js, Jupyter, Teradata, and Mathematica.
Examples of some of the programming languages students will gain practical experience using includes, but is not limited to the following: Java, R, Python and the Wolfram Language.
We Are an AWS Educate Cloud Partner
As an Amazon Academy Partner, Seton Hill has access to hundreds of data science-based algorithms and thousands of web services used by corporations to conduct global business.
Expert Faculty With Time for You
Our smaller program size means that you get personalized attention from our experienced faculty. Accomplished faculty from our mathematics and computer science programs will partner with you in developing your knowledge base and advancing toward your career goals.
Internship or Research Experience
At Seton Hill, you have the option of completing either an internship or research project to provide you with practical field experience before you graduate.
Your Career in Data Science
The job market for data scientists is growing rapidly - much faster than for other occupations, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2020, the mean annual wage for computer and information research scientists was $103,930. (Many positions in this field require a master’s degree.) Our award-winning Career and Professional Development Center will help you prepare for your career, and is available to both students and alumni.
Cost & Aid
Seton Hill’s competitive tuition and comprehensive aid packages make it possible for you to enjoy the benefits of a private, career-focused liberal arts university at less than the cost of many state universities.
