Stephen Harvey ’14 Releases Album and Teaches Music
Life has been a whirlwind for Stephen Harvey since he graduated from Seton Hill in 2014.
He earned a master’s degree in music and Jazz studies from Youngstown State University, composed and recorded an album of original music, got engaged, landed a teaching job in Maryland and appeared on The Meredith Vieira Show with comedian and television host Steve Harvey.
But Stephen says he’s not done yet.
His ultimate goal is to earn his doctorate in music, teach at the university level and continue to write and perform his own music.
As part of his master’s thesis, Stephen wrote “Suite Childhood,” a three-piece arrangement for mixed ensemble. And while he wasn’t required to record it, he did just that – releasing an album featuring “Suite Childhood” and other music he wrote during his two years in the program. The recording features musician friends and classmates he met in Youngstown.
The experience gave Stephen the opportunity to learn more about the business side of music – from raising the money to recording the album to promoting the finished product.
“I'm excited I got to do it, and I'll probably do it again but I understand why people don't record back to back to back,” he says.
As a newly minted elementary music teacher at North Salisbury Elementary, Stephen passes on his love of music to 630 students. He enjoys dancing with the first graders and working with the second graders on their concert for parents.
“I've learned a lot about patience,” Stephen says.
Seton Hill’s young alumni are making their mark on the world through their work in science and healthcare, finance and business, industry, entertainment and service to those in need. The Spring/Winter 2017 edition of Seton Hill’s Forward magazine featured 30 of these alumni, all under the age of 30. You can find all of their stories here on Seton Hill’s site (just look for the “30 Under 30” icon).
