Cybersecurity for Seniors: Helping the Community Through an Internet Connection
In our digital age, it’s easy to fall behind on the latest technology. Often, older generations have difficulty keeping up with the new devices that have been integrated into their lives. This is something that Seton Hill University student Theologos Petridis noticed firsthand while visiting Odin View Apartments, a senior living community. He realized he might be able to help the residents struggling with technology. What started as a Senior Seminar service project evolved into a passion project.
“We really just wanted to use our abilities to serve the community, specifically to serve the people who need it most,” Petridis said.
After enlisting Andrew Campbell, a fellow student in Seton Hill’s MBA in Cybersecurity Risk Management Program, they began their mission for change. Together, Petridis and Campbell coordinated with senior community staff to facilitate tech seminars. They then gathered other students who could help. The student group visited Odin View Apartments in Greensburg and Grand View Senior Residences in Irwin.
“We really just wanted to use our abilities to serve the community, specifically to serve the people who need it most,” Petridis said.
Seminars consisted of an information session and individualized assistance. They discussed cybersecurity best practices, password security, two-factor authentication, phishing and AI. They then provided help with specific technology questions regarding personal and community devices.
The group of students plans to continue these information sessions at other senior living communities, including Caritas Christi, the residence for the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill.
