Women's Flag Football Team Gets Support from Steelers, Hosts Flag Fest on The Hill
Intramural competition for the club team started at the end of the March where local high school and college teams took part in the Showcase Game of the Week at Saint Vincent College.
Seton Hill played two games at the kickoff with the event bringing together students from Allegheny, Bethany, Chatman, Franciscan, Pitt, and Saint Vincent, marking the first time an NFL-sanctioned league has hosted this type of event.
The season runs throughout the spring, with regular season games every week through May 11, followed by playoffs the weekend of May 17-18. Since the kickoff, Seton Hill has defeated two different Pitt teams. On Sunday, April 27 from 1 to 4 p.m., Seton Hill University will host Flag Fest on the Hill, a tournament with teams from the University of Pittsburgh and Franciscan University of Steubenville at the ProGrass (football practice) Field on campus.
Seton Hill began looking into Women's Flag Football after the Atlantic East Conference added it as a varsity sport in the spring of 2024. Meetings were held with the Steelers throughout 2024, and a women’s flag football tournament was held on campus in the fall with 30 participants.
This spring, 25 women came out to join the team.
Interest in flag football is growing, especially after it was announced as a sport for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and the Steelers have put their support behind growing flag football locally. The league has 48 teams this year, with 14 teams participating for the first time, growing rapidly from just six high schools participating in 2022. To continue developing women's flag football in the collegiate space, the Steelers – with the support of the NFL – gave each college team participating in the tournament a $7,500 grant to aid their programs. Seton Hill’s funds will be used for jerseys, equipment, game support and future programmatic needs.
