Senior Social Work Major Selected as One of Four Inaugural Student Fellows Nationwide

Marissa Urbanic Will Assist with Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors Conference, Programming

Senior Marissa Urbanic has been selected as an Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors (BPD) Student Fellow for the 2024-25 academic year. The program is in its inaugural year with just four fellows selected in the nationwide search.

The fellowship recognizes outstanding students and provides them with leadership development, networking opportunities, and professional growth. Marissa will be collaborating with leaders from the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors to support conference programming, mentor new student attendees, and contribute to key initiatives at the BPD Conference in March in Las Vegas.

“This fellowship recognizes my academic achievements, dedication to social work, and commitment to making a positive impact in the community,” Marissa said. “I am incredibly honored and excited to have this opportunity. I look forward to working with the other BSW students and the leaders from the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors.”

As part of the conference, she will be attending a special session for Student Fellows and present her research at the student conference, titled “Crisis Intervention Training: Does CIT Encourage the Use of County Crisis Resources?”

As part of her degree, Marissa completed an internship with Westmoreland Community Action in the fall of 2024 and continues to work there as a mobile crisis worker traveling in a mobile unit to respond to mental health crises all over Westmoreland County. She conducts mini mental health assessments with their consumers and helps them find the resources they need within their community.

Marissa will graduate with her Bachelor of Social Work in May with a specialization in Behavioral Health and Addictions and a minor in Psychology. She plans to pursue a Master of Social Work and become a licensed social worker in the future.

Marissa was recently featured in the Fall/Winter 2024-25 issue of the Seton Hill Forward Magazine's Help From the Hill story about student service at Seton Hill for her role as president of the Project H.O.P.E. student organization and the work of their leadership team to grow the organization and increase campus and community engagement. The organization won the Outstanding Student Organization and Outstanding Community Impact awards at Seton Hill’s Spotlight Awards in May 2024.
