More than Half of Griffins Athletes Named PSAC Scholar Athletes
More than half of Seton Hill student athletes were honored as Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar Athletes for the 2016-17 academic year. The conference honored 243 Griffins with the award, which recognizes student athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above. Seton Hill led the conference with a 53 percent scholar-athlete rate, while West Chester University held a 48% rating.
The PSAC included 134 Seton Hill female athletes on the Scholar Athlete list. Women’s sports were led by 28 members of the cross country/track and field programs. Soccer and lacrosse tied for second with 20 athletes each. Volleyball was next with 15 followed by softball with 12 and basketball with 11. Field hockey also reached double figures with 10. Equestrian and tennis each placed seven on the list while golf finished with four.
Of the male athletes, 109 were named Scholar Athletes for 2016-17 with the 23 members of the football team leading the way for men’s teams. Lacrosse was next with 20 athletes, followed by baseball with 18, track/cross country and soccer with 16 each, and basketball and wrestling with 8 each.
Last season, 52% of Seton Hill student athletes earn the PSAC Scholar Athlete Award.
The PSAC also announced a new record of scholar athletes has been set, with 2,901 student athletes from the league's 18 institutions being named to the list during the 2016-17 academic year.
The 2,901 scholar athletes marks 41% of the student athlete population. Both of these numbers break the previous record of 2,692 and 40% set one year ago. The league has now registered at least a 30% rate for nine straight years.
