Brian Dawson, who graduated from Seton Hill in 2007 after studying communication and political science through the Adult Degree Program, was named Acting Deputy Secretary for the Office of the Commonwealth Libraries in 2015. The Office of Commonwealth Libraries, within the Pennsylvania Department of Education, operates a major research library and leads the development of the state’s public, school, academic and special libraries.

“I woke up on a Thursday morning, called my wife and told her, 'I am going back to college.' I drove to SHU about an hour later and spoke with an ADP advisor, I started that Saturday. I had my doubts but was inspired by professors who made me realize I could be successful… I have always returned to SHU as a source of learning and motivation. SHU took a chance on me and I am grateful and proud to be part of the community.” 

Brian works at the Office of Commonwealth Libraries as the Director, Bureau of Library Development where he is responsible for directing a staff implementing statewide programs and services; evaluating programming and services; working with senior management to integrate state and federal budgets; interpreting and implementing the laws of Pennsylvania that relate to public libraries. Brian previously worked as the Library Director for the Oil City Public Library and an Administrator for the Oil Creek Library District. Brian also worked at the California Area Public Library as the Director.

After graduating from Seton Hill, Brian earned a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh.
