Greensburg, PA – The National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education (NCCHE) will host its Sixth National Holocaust Education Conference "Teaching the Holocaust in Catholic Schools” on November 8, 9 & 10th, 2003 at Seton Hill University.

“Teaching the Holocaust in Catholic Schools” will bring acclaimed religious scholars together with Catholic school educators from across the U.S. to discuss Holocaust education programs and curricula. Conference activities will include workshops, panels, lectures and informal networking sessions. A special screening of the documentary film “Tak.for.Alt: Survival of a Human Spirit,” an art talk and reception with the curator of the exhibit “Echoes of the Holocaust: Anna Walinska’s Paintings, Drawings and Collage, 1940 – 1945” (opening October 30 in Seton Hill’s Harlan Gallery) and an interfaith Kristallnacht Remembrance Service will also be offered during the Conference.

Featured speakers during the Conference will be:

Keynote Speaker Dr. Mary C. Boys, SNJM, on "Remembering the Shoah: An Educational and Theological Challenge in the Third Millennium" Sunday, November 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Cecilian Hall. Boys is the McAlpin Professor of Practical Theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York, and is the author of over 60 articles and four books, including “Has God Only One Blessing? Judaism as a Source of Christian Self-Understanding.”

Dr. John T. Pawlikowksi, OSM, on "Why Teach the Holocaust in Catholic Schools?" Sunday, November 9 at 11 a.m. in Cecilian Hall. Pawlikowski is Professor of Social Ethics at The Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and Director of the Catholic-Jewish Studies Program of the Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Center. He has authored/edited over 15 books, including “Good and Evil After Auschwitz.” Pawlikowski has recently come under fire for criticizing the theological accuracy of Mel Gibson’s new film “The Passion,” and has agreed to address this topic at the Conference.

Dr. Philip A. Cunningham on "Catholic Textbook Presentations of Jews and Judaism" Saturday, November 8 at 2 p.m. in Cecilian Hall. Cunningham is Executive Director and Adjunct Professor of Theology at the Center for Christian-Jewish Learning at Boston College and is the author of several articles and books, including the forthcoming “Sharing the Scriptures.”

Daniel C. Napolitano on "When Catholics Study the Holocaust: Guidelines for Owning the Intercultural Experience of Studying and Teaching about the Holocaust" Monday, November 10 at 9 a.m. in Cecilian Hall. Napolitano is a former high school teacher, Director of Teacher Fellowship Programs at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the author of “The Holocaust: A Teaching Guide for Catholic Schools.”

Dr. Eva Fleischner on "Rescuers of Jews During the Holocaust" Monday, November 10 at 10 a.m. in Cecilian Hall. Fleischner is professor emerita of religion at Montclair State University and the author of “The View of Judaism in German Christian Theology Since 1945,” and “Auschwitz: Beginning of A New Era?”
