Two young gentleman of marriageable age create imaginary identities to give them respectable excuses for social escapades. Jack, residing in the country with his ward Cecily, escapes to town where he woos Gwendolyn under the name Ernest. Algernon, who loves cucumber sandwiches almost as much as he does himself, then visits Jack’s country estate where he introduces himself as Ernest, capturing Cecily’s fancy. Gwendolyn’s mama, Lady Bracknell with her extraordinary knack for unexpected arrivals, creates even more complications in this timeless and effervescent comedy of manners
