This delightfully inventive revue celebrates the American work ethic in rousing and memorable song. Lyrics and dialogue make use of the original words of uncommon men and women, all of them American workers--including a parking lot attendant, corporate executive, newsboy, schoolteacher, gas man, housewife, fireman, waitress, millworker and a host of others–all of them singing passionately about their jobs, all of them inviting us to share not only their daily routines, but their most cherished hopes and profoundest dreams.

A pair of twins are separated by shipwreck. Viola, in search of her brother disguises herself as the boy Cesario and enters the service of amorous Duke Orsino. On his behalf she woos the mourning Countess Olivia. The mission fails as Olivia proclaims her love, not for the Duke, but for his page. Meanwhile, Olivia’s egocentric steward Malvolio alienates her mischievous maid, her drunken uncle, and a cowardly knight by cutting short their noisy party. The New York Times called this Pulitzer Prize winning American play an “exalting morality” and “one of the memorable works” of the 20th century “as verse, as drama and as spiritual inquiry.” Using the circus as a theatrically exciting environment, MacLeish probes the unanswered problems of man’s relationship to God in an era of cruel injustices. J.B. is the modern counterpart of the biblical Job. When he is reunited with his wife, two humbled but valiant people accept the universe and agree to begin life all over again.
