GREENSBURG, PA Nabila Uddin, an outstanding student at Greater Latrobe High School (GLSHS), will be attending Seton Hill College in the fall as the Ned Nakles Scholar. Uddin received the Ned Nakles Leadership Award for Academic Excellence and Community Service at GLSHS during the Honors Award Ceremony held May 14th.
The Nakles Award, created by Ned’s wife and Seton Hill College Trustee, Barbara Nakles, is a four-year scholarship designed to reward GLSHS students for their academic excellence and outstanding community involvement. Ned J. Nakles Sr. himself graduated from Greater Latrobe High School.
Nabila, the daughter of Faiyaz and Farzana Uddin of Greensburg, plans on majoring in chemistry and following the pre-med program at Seton Hill in the fall.
As a student at GLSHS, Uddin was a member of the National Honors Society, the German Club, the Yearbook Committee, the German National Honor Society and Interact (a club dedicated to helping the less fortunate students in the district with canned goods, toys, etc).
In addition, Uddin has participated on the Latrobe Recreational Basketball team and the St. Vincent Basketball camp. She also served as a volunteer at the Latrobe Area Hospital for two years and worked at Idlewild Park for two summers.
Nabila Uddin is the third recipient of the Nakles scholarship. Other recipients include sophomore Maia Johnston and junior Erica Mudge.
According to Seton Hill College President, JoAnne Boyle, "Ned Nakles was a lifelong learner who never faltered in his devotion to the young people of Westmoreland County. Ned’s belief in education was passionate and inspired him in his lifetime quest to improve the region in which he lived, worked and served as a leader." Seton Hill is proud to offer this award to students who emulate Ned’s ideals.
