GREENSBURG, PA - On May 12, 2001, Seton Hill College (SHC) awarded a total of 144 undergraduate degrees, 11 Masters degrees and seven certificates. In addition, the honorary degree of Doctors of Law presented Lieutenant Governor of Ohio Maureen O’Connor. Chairman of the Board of Trustees Paul M. Pohl presided over Seton Hill’s 83nd Commencement ceremonies in Sullivan Hall on campus. Dr. Mary Ann Gawelek, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, presented the candidates for degrees, and Dr. JoAnne Boyle, President of the College, conferred the degrees. SHC alumnae Maureen O’Connor, Lieutenant Governor of Ohio delivered the address. O’Connor congratulated both the graduating class for their accomplishments and their family and friends for supporting them and making their graduation possible. She spoke about the differences the graduates had already made both within themselves and on the Seton Hill community. "The life lessons learned in the dorms and through interactions on campus are just as important as the lessons learned in the classrooms," O’Connor told the Class of 2001. "In your time here, you have changed the Hill just as much as it has changed you. During your studies here, you were encouraged to be creative and to be unafraid of going into uncharted territory. Whether you realize it or not, you are ready to go now and make a difference in the world." O’Connor encouraged the graduates to get involved in local government to help make a direct impact on the community. She urged the Class of 2001 to participate in activities with their fullest commitment and to be ready to act when opportunities present themselves. "You were fortunate to have former President of Poland Lech Walesa visit here recently," O’Connor continued. "He did not plan to help end Communism in Poland and eventually in all of Eastern Europe. He was simply ready and willing to do the right thing when the time came. He is an example for all of us to follow." Most Reverend Anthony G.
